RAR Blanket CAL: Part 7

Hello Rainbow CAL-ers and welcome to Part 7 of the Rainbows After the Rain Blanket CAL (which I am hosting with Andrea of Kokopelli.

Part 6 was the final "instalment" of the Poncho CAL, but we have quite a bit of work to still complete on the Blanket.

This week we will be joining the Traditional Granny Squares, the Some Days are Diamond Squares and the Bring Me Flowers Squares, as well as crocheting a striped panel onto the joined granny square strip.

Link to Andrea's Post:  Part 7

Still to follow:

Part 8:  22 August 2017 - Over the Rainbow Centre Panel.    Join panels from Part 6 and Part 7 together.

Part 9 (Final):  5 September 2017.   Border and edging.

NOTE:  Links to all CAL-related posts can be found in the "Files" on the Zooty Owl Crochet-a-long FACEBOOK GROUP

(Please join the Crochet-a-long Facebook Group if you are participating in the CAL.    Share your photos, ask questions, help fellow CAL-ers and make some new crochet friends!)

It is not too late to join in - the patterns will remain on my blog.

Happy hooking!!!

COBBLED PATHWAYS:  VERTICAL STRIPE

PATTERN TERMS:    US

YARN:  Elle Charity Chunky (12 ply).   Stylecraft Special Chunky is an excellent quality / great value alternative yarn.

HOOK SIZE:  5.50mm (I/9 US or 5 CANADIAN)

NOTE:  Gauge is not too important with this project. Yarn thicknesses vary somewhat from brand to brand as do the tensions of individual crocheters.  The most important thing is that your tension remains even throughout the project.

COLOURWAY:   Each crocheter may choose his / her own colour layout - colour changes / breaks are suggestions only.

STRIPES are worked alternating right side and wrong side of your work.

IMPORTANT:  Read through pattern before starting to crochet.

Joining:  We will be using my VISIBLE JOIN METHOD which is explained in more detail HERE.  The VISIBLE JOIN is a very forgiving joining method, which gives you a pretty “stitched” look on the right side of your work.  (This join is especially useful when joining squares with uneven stitch counts or for crocheters with uneven tension).

STEP 1:

Join the 5 Traditional Granny Squares into a strip

Granny Strip = 5 x Traditional Granny Squares (20cm x 20cm)

To obtain a straight border each corner space counts as 1 stitch

Stitch Count:  (1ch + 3dc) corner + 18dc (side) + (3dc + 1ch) corner = 26sts per square

When joining these squares, crochet the sc of the join between your 3dc “granny” groups;

NOTE:   1 Foundation row of sc and 8 x rows of Cobbled Pathways Stripes are worked along the Right Side of the Grannies Strip (this is especially important if you have a specific colour order!!)

COBBLED PATHWAYS STRIPE

Foundation Row:   With RS facing work a standing sc into the corner 2ch of the first square in the strip; sk first st, *work 1sc into the top of each st to next corner, 1sc into corner, 1dc into loop of join, 1sc into corner on next square,* repeat from *to* across all squares, ending with sc in last 2ch corner. Fasten off yarn.

Stitch Count:  129sc and 4dc = 133sts

Row 1:  With RS facing join yarn with a standing dc in beginning sc;  1dc into same sc;  skip 1st, 2dc into next sc;  *skip 1st, 2dc into next sc* repeat *to* 64 times more.  Fasten off yarn.  Turn work.

Stitch Count:  67 x 2dc groups

Row 2:  With WS facing join yarn in beginning dc;  4ch (counts as 1dc, 1ch);  *2dc into next space between 2dc groups* repeat *to* 65 times more; 1ch, skip 1dc, 1dc into last dc.   Fasten off yarn.  Turn work.

Stitch count:  1dc, 1ch;  66 x 2dc groups;  1ch, 1dc (134dc and 2 x 1ch spaces)

Row 3:  With RS facing work a standing dc in beginning dc of previous row;  1dc into same st as join, skip 1ch space, *2dc into next space between 2dc groups* repeat *to* 64 times more, skip 1ch sp, work 2dc into the top of the 3ch (or standing dc).  Fasten off yarn.   Turn work.

Stitch count:  67 x 2dc groups (134dc)

Row 4:  Repeat Row 2
Row 5:  Repeat Row 3
Row 6:  Repeat Row 2
Row 7:  Repeat Row 3
Row 8:  Repeat Row 2

STEP 2:

Join the 10 “Bring Me Flowers” Squares into a strip

Flowers Strip = 10 x Bring Me Flowers Squares (10cm x 10cm)

To obtain a straight border each corner space counts as 1 stitch

Stitch Count  : (1ch + 3trc) corner + 6dc (side) + (3trc + 1ch) corner = 14 stitches

When joining these squares, crochet the sc of the join between your 3dc “granny” groups.

NOTE:   1 Foundation row of sc is worked along both sides of the Flowers Strip.  This is done to even your stitch count to match the 20cm x 2cm squares strips

Foundation Row:  With RS facing work a standing sc into the corner 3ch of the first square in the strip, 1sc into each of next 12 stitches, 1sc into corner, *1dc into loop of join, 1sc into corner on next square, sk 1st, 1sc into each of next 10st, skip next st, 1sc into corner* repeat *to* 7 times more working 1sc more into corner on last repeat; 1dc into loop of join, 1sc into corner on next square, 1sc into each of next 12 sts, 1sc into corner

Stitch Count:  125sc and 9dc = 134sts

STEP 3:

Join the 10 “Some Days are Diamonds” Squares into a strip

Diamonds Strip = 10 x Some Days Are Diamonds Squares (10cm x 10cm)

To obtain a straight border each corner space counts as 1 stitch

Stitch Count  :  (1ch + 3dc) corner + 6dc (side) + (3dc + 1ch) corner = 14 stitches

When joining these squares, crochet the sc of the join between your 3dc “granny” groups.

NOTE:   1 Foundation row of sc is worked along both sides of the Diamonds Strip.   This is done to even your stitch count to match the 20cm x 2cm squares strips.
